Forty years ago, on February 10, 1971, Patti Smith made her Poetry Project debut accompanied by Lenny Kaye on guitar. On this ruby anniversary, Patti and Lenny celebrate four decades of “three chords merged with the power of the word” in a special commemorative concert of poetry and music to benefit The Poetry Project. Patti recently won the National Book Award for nonfiction for her memoir Just Kids.

Opening the evening will be their longtime friend Janet Hamill, who has published five books of poetry, the latest called Body of Water, and two CDs of spoken word backed by the music of Moving Star.

The event will be held in the sanctuary (larger hall, 10th St. entrance) of St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery. Admission for this special performance is $15 general / $10 for Project members/students.

Please note that ADMISSION IS AT THE DOOR ONLY. No advance purchase. We will begin selling admission and letting people into the sanctuary at 7:30.

There are times I wishes that God had said I should live in New York. He said I should live in England and be happy here. I try to live up to God’s expectations. Even the rainy days bring a little joy to my spirit. But I cannot be where I am not. But I was blessed to be at Bexhill a week ago and enjoyed a magical evening with Patti by the sea. Must get to New York soon. God did not give me wheels but he never said I cant fly ! Peace and Love. Robert

  6. Patti-
I am an artist and a BIG fan. i lived in NY from 76-87. Had a blast. You inspire me to be the best I can be as a sculptor! I have a website and you can see my work there.I consider myself to be a visual poet. Want to come to the reading on Wed. for more inspiration! I have seen you perform three times- twice at the 9:30 Club and once in Baltimore- where i was going to grad school at The Maryland Institute. I can’t think of another artist I would rather see! I listen to your work as I work on my art in my studio- Read the book too!

I don’t know where the Sanctuary is? Anyone?

  8. admin says:

The sanctuary is the large hall of St. Mark’s Church, which is on the corner of 2nd Ave & 10th St.

  9. Susan Bowen says:

Just so people understand, this is an active, functioning church. The santuary is where the church services take place… as well as various performances during off hours…. so you enter the main entrance of the church building as indicated above.

  10. Susan Bowen says:

    misspelling…. make that sanctuary….

  11. admin says:

Yes, it is a functioning church with a great history: http://stmarksbowery.org/

Hello Patti, I would love to be there and listen to your concert with Lenny Kaye. Tonight, this will be a really memorable performance. However I am not in New York but in Munich, where I met you twice last June. The first time in the bookstore Lehmkuhl, where I could hand on you my letter about signs while you were signing my exemplar of Just Kids. The second time in the Galerie Sonja Junkers, where you gave me a new sign, Africa, you said to me, while I was looking at your photograph showing the feet of a little girl. Thank you for your inspiration…
